RISE OF THE NAZIS

Director: Julian Jones
Production: 72 Films

The three-part documentary series Rise of the Nazis explores the various psychological perspectives of Hitler's contemporaries, highlighting the incremental decisions and missed warning signs that led to the atrocities of the holocaust and World War Two.

The score for Rise of the Nazis (72 Films & BBC) earned Tom an Ivor Novello an Ivor Novello nomination in the Best TV Score category.

On his nomination, Tom says: “Five years ago, I adjudicated on the TV score panel and, in knowing how it all works, I'm all the more humbled by this nomination. I am presuming the process was similar - a (virtual?) room full of composers sitting around listening and discussing every bit of music from TV, fact or fiction, from the last year and, by a slow process of elimination, eventually whittling it down to a short-list.

Many thanks to my team at Leland Originals for introducing me to Julian Jones and 72 Films, and to Julian for giving such a gift of a music brief which was simultaneously super-focused in concept but completely flexible in execution!

I love to collaborate with other musicians wherever possible and this project was no different. Big shout to the mighty Rob Ames on viola. I sent him the 8 key themes from which I derived almost 3 hours of music and he sent back a whole range of drones, noises, improvisations, and loads of other massed colourful string textures, which transformed the sonic landscape of the project.”

Rise of the Nazis is available to watch on BBC iPlayer here. Listen to the full soundtrack, released through 72 Films here.
